What Is an ERA in Baseball?
ERA, or Earned Run Average, is a key metric to evaluate a pitcher’s performance. It represents the average number of earned runs a pitcher allows for a standard nine-inning game. The lower the ERA, the better the pitcher has performed at preventing the opposing team from scoring.
How to Use the ERA Calculator
To use the ERA calculator, simply input:
- The number of earned runs allowed by the pitcher
- The total number of innings pitched
The calculator will apply the standard ERA formula:
ERA = (Earned Runs × 9) ÷ Innings Pitched
This gives you the pitcher’s average earned runs allowed per full game.
Example Calculation
Let’s say a pitcher has given up 3 earned runs over 7 innings:
ERA = (3 × 9) ÷ 7 = 27 ÷ 7 = 3.86
This means the pitcher has an ERA of 3.86, a strong figure in most professional leagues.
Why ERA Matters
ERA is widely used in baseball scouting, game analysis, and fantasy leagues to assess pitcher efficiency. While it doesn’t account for unearned runs or defensive errors, ERA is still a cornerstone in evaluating a pitcher’s ability to control a game.
